Barack Obama. Boris Johnson. Eli Manning. Snoop Dogg. And Brea Grant. These are just a handful of celebrities and politicians who are using the fastest growing social network site in the world – Twitter.

Today, we’re going to be looking at why Twitter is such a good tool for marketers and online business entrepreneurs – and how countless people are quietly scoffing up zero cost traffic everyday using it.

1. Twitter Breaks Into The Top 3 Social Sites (Be Warned Facebook & MySpace – It’s Coming To Get Ya!)

Research from Neilson Online has shown that My Space is losing its status as the number 1 social network site. Yes, it’s still top but the growth has slowed tremendously (I think it mentioned 1% growth in members in 08 compared to 07). Most people now think of Facebook as the fastest growing network site (and it’s certainly up there with 39 million users, and an annual growth of 116%). But it’s not.

The real champion of growth is Twitter – up a staggering 343% since September 2007. And it’s popular with everyone from celebrities and schoolkids to internet marketers. So, whether you want to talk about the latest traffic strategies, or you want to explain to the public why Mr McCain’s healthcare policy wont work – or you just want to tell everyone how Mr Reid’s beard caught fire in Chemistry class, someone on Twitter wants to know.

Even large corporations have piggybacked on the Twitter bandwagon of late, with Starbucks, Dell and even Ford setting up Twitter profiles to name but a handful.

They do it because they understand that the entire world is coming on Twitter. They understand that Twitter affords them a marketing and branding opportunity at a zero level investment. And above all, they do it because real people are actually going to read what they write.

Do you?
2. Why You Should Start Using Twitter For Your Own Traffic Generation & Marketing Strategy

It’s quite staggering, but the leading social network sites now reach 35% of the internet population. And it’s growing pretty fast. Note, that I said “leading” – and this is important.

It’s important because there are now hundreds of these social network sites, with lots of amateurs and wannabe’s desperate to set-up the next Twitter, or Facebook, or Myspace. I would not recommend spending your time setting up on each and every one because many are devoid of any activity. You should only focus on the highest traffic selection of social network sites, because social network marketing is only one cog in your marketing machinery. Time is your most valuable resource – so discriminate when deciding which sites make the list, and which don’t. And Twitter ought to be pretty close to the top.

Here are some of the reasons for using Twitter for traffic:

- You can brand yourself as an expert within the niches that you operate.

- You can use Twitter to siphon a lot of your followers onto your blog or website.

- You can build a social community with zero technical experience.

Great. Except, there are also problems as many internet marketers have discovered to their peril…

3. Just When You Thought It Was Safe To Get In…Spammy Spammerson And His Buddies Pop Up

Internet marketers (bless them) are an eager crowd. Always energetic. Always looking for the next big traffic winner. But, in doing so they sometimes goof up. Some don’t really read the rules and conditions before trying their marketing tactics – which of course means they get banned from various traffic generation sites – like article directories. And forums. And ebay. And, of course, Twitter.

So, hundreds of marketers who have rushed onto twitter with delusions of grandeur have returned empty handed – simply because they didn’t do it right. They didn’t follow a proven system.

The point is, there’s a right and wrong way of unleashing Twitter Traffic. It’s not OK to leap in feet first, brain last and start a campaign of blatant link spamming. It’s not polite. It annoys people. And it’s ineffective. Just as people on forums, and newsletter subscribers, and facebook users don’t like being bombarded by blatant ads, nor do people who use Twitter.

But, use Twitter the right way and you’ll find a useful source of targeted traffic can be yours – for nothing. And, ultimately, that’s exactly what every smart business entrepreneur is after.
